10: Ethernet - 2.5GBASE-T & 5GBASE-T Ethernet part 6

2.5GBASE-T & 5GBASE-T Etherne

2.5GBASE-T and 5GBASE-T Ethernet
In 2014, 2.5GBASE-T and 5GBASE-T Ethernet over twisted pair copper wire was proposed by NBASE-T Alliance, industry-wide cooperative effort, and approved in 2016 as IEEE 802.3bz. It surely seems strange to you that this version of Ethernet must be faster than 10Gigabit Ethernet on the grounds that it has appeared recently. This version was created with low speed on purpose, for 10Gigabit Ethernet is still not supported in many devices ; also some people cannot afford to install such standard. The solution was to create a standard of a speed between 1Gigabit and 10 Gigabit per second, which is 2.5GBASE-T and 5GBASE-T Ethernet.

The advantages of this Ethernet standard is that it is compatible with the devices that support low speeds; furthermore, it is affordable and ubiquitous. For that reason, it is found in many places such as service provider networks,  home, enterprise. But it works only with Cat5e, Cat6 copper cables or better . As the previous standards, this one also reaches a maximum length of 100 m. These two standards are also known as NBASE-T or MGBASE-T.

The next lesson is a sequel to this one
